There is a hedge that runs across the bottom of the field towards the stream. It looks just like any ordinary hedge. But come a little closer. There are small front doors half hidden in the tangled roots, and little curtained windows in the leafy trunks. Groups of mice can be glimpsed in the long grass, and down by the stream, others are busily at work in the flourmill and the dairy stump. This is Brambly Hedge. Based on the exquisite picture books by Jill Barklem, these stories detail the lives and adventures of a community of mice who live in Brambly Hedge. The eight tales – Spring Story, Summer Story, Autumn Story and Winter Story; the second series – The Secret Staircase, High Hills, Poppy’s Babies and Sea Story – were all an immediate success with readers of all ages and have been translated into 14 languages. The style of these films evokes a lost way of life – warm, cosy and safe, but not without its humour and drama. Simple yet rich with detail, kind and responsible, the Brambly Hedge series will touch the hearts of its audience, both young and old.
