Here's an Art Attack using sand for fantastic painting effects!

You will need:
  • Stiff card
  • PVA glue
  • Paintbrush
  • Acrylic paint
  • Black permanent pen
Find a piece of stiff card and carefully brush a thin layer of PVA glue all over.
While the glue is still wet, sprinkle sand all over the card.
The grittier the sand, the better...
...and make sure that you go right into the corners of the card!
When you've covered all of the card, leave it to dry.

When the glue has dried, simply tip off the excess sand.
Next, use pencil to sketch out a design of whatever you want to paint on the sand-covered card.

This is going to be an Egyptian scene.
Make the sketch really simple - don't add in too much detail.
Next, mix up some paint washes for the picture.

Make the washes by simply mixing a small amount of acrylic paint with water.
The paint needs to be quite watery.

Just brush it on...
...and because the paint wash is so thin, the texture of the sand shows through!
When the wash has dried, you can add on extra detail using a permanent black pen.
Here are some other ideas.

Here's a beautiful tropical scene...
...and here's a night-time cityscape.

Try it yourself!
