Here's a tip for creating distance in your pictures.

You will need:
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Coloured pencils or crayons
In this picture, the mountains are smaller than the man - giving the impression they're a long way away.
To draw a fence, create posts which get shorter and closer together as they go into the distance.
The fencing itself gets thinner too.
The path also gets narrower the further away it gets.
Even over a short distance, things get smaller and narrower.

This walker is carrying some fishing rods over his shoulder.
To make legs look like they're striding away from you, make the back one fat...
...and the front one narrower.
So when drawing a painting, distance has a really wierd effect of making everything go smaller and narrower.

Distance also makes things look more faded the further away they are. So draw stronger lines in the foreground of your pictures.
Even colours fade as they go into the distance!

Try it yourself!
