Paint a watercolour picture using black only!

You will need:
  • Watercolour paints
  • Paintbrushes
  • Water
This Art Attack is perfect if you've only got a few watercolours left in your paintbox, because you only need one!

As you can see here, Neil's using black.
The trick is to use differing amounts of water to vary the strength of the colour.
If you use a lot of water, the colour is very washed out - and the black becomes grey.
The more water you use, the lighter the colour becomes.
Load the brush with more paint to darken the shade.
You can test the strength of the colour before you apply it to the picture by dabbing the brush onto some kitchen roll first.
Here you can see Neil's picture taking shape. There are clouds in the sky and watery surface in the foreground.
You can see here that he's adding hills and trees in the middle distance.
For very fine foreground detail, use a small brush and paint with very little water.
A beautiful picture from just black watercolour paint.
