Have you ever used a charcoal pencil?
You will need:

|
|
|
|
This is a charcoal pencil - it's just like a stick of charcoal, but it doesn't snap as easily, and you won't get your fingers dirty! |

|
|
|
|
Draw with it as you would a pencil. It makes thick marks. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
It smudges easily, so be careful... |
|
|
|
|
|
|
...the good thing about charcoal is it gives an atmospheric effect to sketches. |

|
|
|
|
When the pencil wears down, just sharpen it like you would an ordinary pencil. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
You can use your finger to smudge the charcoal to create shading. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Now Neil's picking out some highlights on his picture of horses with the tip of a white chalk... |

|
...followed by dots around the feet. It looks like the horses are charging through the water! |

Here you can see he's using the sharp edge of the chalk to represent spray on the picture |

|
And the chalk on its side is great for creating the surface of the water! |
