If you can't afford to buy or hire a fancy dress costume, just make your own!

You will need:
  • Cardboard Box Card
  • Paint
  • Pen
  • String
  • Scissors
Start by opening out a large cardboard box - as big as you can get - flat.

Get someone to help you draw around your head and shoulders, onto the cardboard box card like this.
Carefully loop a piece of string around your face, and pull it fairly tight.
Next, place the loop of string onto the cardboard box card, as a rough guide to where your face should go and how big it should be.

Use a pen to draw around the inside of the loop.
Now you can create the rest of your costume.

Make sure it includes the head and shoulder area.
When you've completed your design, cut it out.

You need to cut the face area out, too.
Next, pierce some holes for string, ribbon or elastic.

Carefully use a pencil to put two holes above both arm pits are.
Now you can paint!

Use acrylic or poster paint - it's up to you!
Once you've finished, allow your flat fancy dress to dry.

Once dry, add on some detail with a marker pen.
Next, tie string, ribbon or elastic through the holes you made so that you can tie around yourself!
Next time you decide to have a party, why not get your friends to make their own flat fancy dress - you never know who will turn up!

Try it yourself!
