Create this octopus for your wall to put things on.

You will need:
  • Cardboard box card
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • String
  • Newspaper
  • Egg boxes
  • Paint
Start by making a paper spring.

To do this draw lots of lines, ruler width apart, lengthways down both sheets of paper.
Use these lines as a guide to cut strips out.
Next, glue all the strips of one colour together end to end, so that they form one long strip.
Do the same with the other colour.
Lay one on a flat surface going down, and one going across at right angles to it, just overlapping at the bottom, like an "L" shape.
Tape or glue these ends together.
When the glue has dried, weave the two pieces together.

Start by folding the top bit down...
...then the side bit over and across...
...and keep going until you've used all the strip up.
Make sure you glue or tape the loose ends together securely, and you should be left with a spring like this.
Now you need to turn the spring into a horrible creature that would make you jump!

Draw anything you like on a piece of paper or card to stick on the end as a face. Neil did a serpent.
Glue the creature's face onto the end of the spring.
Now for the box trap - make sure your small card box has a lid that you can open and close easily.
Slip the paperclips together.
Attach one onto the edge of the lid of the box, so the other dangles down freely.
Tape it into place
The dangly paperclip acts as a catch to keep the trapdoor closed - until it's yanked open!
Decorate your trap door box however you like.
Stick the bottom end of the spring with a dab of glue inside the box.
Close the lid, squashing the spring inside like a jack-in-a-box.
This will keep it in place while the glue dries.
Then, tie a long piece of cotton to the end of the paperclip that's attached to the door.
Now you're ready to set your trap! find a door that opens towards you, like this bedroom cupboard. Sticky tack or tape the box inside.
With the door half closed, tie the loose end of the cotton around the door handle so that it's quite taught and goes all the way up to the box.
So when an unsuspecting person peeps inside...
...they get the shock of their lives!

Try it yourself!
