Get surprise secrets from an ordinary box with this Art Attack!
You will need:
For this Art Attack, you'll need to find a small box that has a hinged lid. The box needs to be big enough for you to fit your hand inside! |
Start on the back of the box. Draw a semi circle along the bottom edge, like this. |
Now turn the box upside down, and draw another semi cirlce on the bottom of the box, so that it joins up with the first one. |
Then carefully cut this shape out. Remember that it's much easier to cut a hole out of a model or artwork if you first push a sharp pencil through it, into a ball of modelling clay. |
This makes a hole that allows you to get a pair of scissors in - and makes cutting out much easier! |
When you've cut the shape out, try putting your hand inside. You can always enlarge the hole if it's too small. |
Next, decorate the box in whichever way you like. Before painting, why not add on some extra detail first? You could cut curvy L-shapes from card and glue them on to make corner brackets... |
...and how about a couple of hinges on the lid? |
A newspaper twist, stuck to a strip of card, makes a great handle. |
Just glue it onto the box lid. |
Once you're happy with extra detail, you can paint the box. |
And when the paint has dried you can add on extra, final detail using a permanent black pen. |

The fake hand is made using a pair of ordinary rubber gloves! To make one of them look as though there is a hand inside, take a pipe cleaner and bend it in half. |
Wrap it up in a piece of newspaper, to make a thin sausage shape. Secure the rolled-up newspaper it in place with sticky tape. |
Make five of these in total... |
...then stuff the rolled-up newspaper pieces into the four fingers and thumb. |
Fill out the rest of the hand by making a flat parcel of newspaper, and sliding that into the glove. |
The pipe cleaners mean that you can actually bend the fingers, to make the hand look more natural. |
Next, draw a line along the palm of the rubber glove, below the thumb. Don't go too near the edge! |
Use scissors to carefully cut along the line. |
Reach inside through the gap and tape the newspaper fingers to the newspaper parcel, to give them a bit more support. |
When everything's secured in place, put your hand in the glove and through the hole. Remember, if you're using a left glove, you'll have to use your left hand, and vice versa! |
Place the box on top of your hand, so that it fits through the hole, and so that the box rests on the palm of the glove. |
Now it looks like your hand is holding the box! It's a good idea to look in a mirror to adjust the box and hand to look just right. |
And if you wear the other glove too, the trick will look even more convincing. Try it yourself! |
